A voice worth listening to: Dylan Thomas’s poem ‘Do not go gentle into that good night’ is read by actor Richard Burton – a wonderful example of a musical, well-articulated, well-paced voice: www.youtube.com/watch?v=UV5crBG4y-E
The wonders of the human voice: The recording below is of Natascha Nikeprelevic, one of the foremost modern exponents of the ancient art of overtone singing, performing her improvised aria ‘Towards the light’ (3 minutes). Overtone singers produce two notes simultaneously: most usually a sustained lower note over which a higher pitched ‘tune’ is sung (though Natascha produces several lower notes below the tune). The effect is ethereal, and a powerful reminder of the almost unlimited potential of the human voice: www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKbaKN9Hu_U
